The Wharton State Forest is the largest tract of land in New Jersey’s state park system. It is also the largest forested area in the state with smaller state forests very nearby.

The forest is part of the larger Atlantic pine barrens ecoregion. The tract also includes numerous historic sites, chief among these is the Batsto Village.

The forest contains an extensive system of hiking and biking trails. The area’s numerous waterways also offer opportunities for paddling and fishing.
