Yosemite National Park
To say Yosemite is popular is something of an understatement. It is by most measures the busiest national park in the United State and that is for a reason. There is a lot to see and the sights are spectacular, to say the least.
Yosemite National Park first came under federal protection in 1864 and was designated a national park in 1890. In 1984, Yosemite was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is best known for its waterfalls, but the mountains of the park were cut over the ages from giant granite rocks which has created a system of steep cliffs and deep valleys. The park also supports a diversity of plants and animals.
One of Yosemite’s most famous features is the granite monolith, El Capitan. It along with other rock features in the park are a strong draw for rock climbers. Other popular recreational activities include camping, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding and auto touring.
If you are planning to visit, try for the shoulder seasons. September to October offers the most pleasant weather, but fewer waterfalls. Late April to early May offers fewer crowds and peak waterfalls due to snow melt. Also, be certain to check Recreation.gov to see if a timed entry pass is necessary.
