Buffalo National River—Arkansas

Planning Tips

  1. I stayed at Tyler Bend Campground, which was conveniently located. There were no hookups, but it was early spring and I have solar. It can get hot here in the summer, so air is probably necessary.

  2. If you want to paddle the river, you will find canoe rentals in St. Joe and Jasper.

  3. Depending on where you stay, Marshall, Mountain Home or Harrison are your best bet for services.

  4. This can be a stand-alone destination or an excellent stop along the way.

Highlights

One of the few rivers in the United States free of man-made obstructions, the Buffalo River was designated as the first national river in 1973. This put an end to pending Corps of Engineer plans to construct flood-control dams. The national park service manages the lower 135 miles of this 153 mile-long river.

The national designation preserves a river that is known for its whitewater, caves, waterfalls and stone bluffs. The river offers opportunities for paddling and fishing. The nearby national forest and Buffalo River Wilderness Area offer great opportunities for hiking.

Selecting a campground at a midpoint will easily allow this destination to be paired with one or more others. See:
