Planning Tips

  1. I stayed at Gulpha Gorge, which was convenient for walking into town or accessing local hiking trails. You might also consider camping between Hot Springs and another destination. There are a lot of options. See the master campground map.

  2. Hot Springs is a small city, but should have all of the service and entertainment options you require.

  3. Hot Springs is a fun location, but a week might be more than enough time to explore. I cut my trip short and went up to Buffalo National River for a few night.

  4. Hot Springs can be a destination or a stop along the way, but it is definitely worth a stop.

Highlights

There are 47 natural hot springs flowing from the side of Hot Spring Mountain and they have long been believed to be a source of healing power. So it is no wonder that the Bath House Row became a popular tourist destination during its heyday at the end of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.

During prohibition, Hot Springs attracted gangsters like Al Capone and the city hosted one of the largest illegal gambling operations in the United States. Today that era is memorialized in the Gangster Museum of America.

Major League Baseball teams once conducted spring training in Hot Springs. The city is often referred to as the “home of spring training.”

Today the National Park Service helps preserve and interpret the story of Hot Springs and Bathhouse Row.
