Congaree National Park—South Carolina

Planning Tips

  1. There are a pair of state parks within close proximity. For more options further out, see the Campgrounds Map.

  2. If you are eligible to use military campgrounds, the Air Force operates Wateree Recreation Area just north of Columbia. See the Military Campgrounds map. Stay at your own risk. It is the worst military campground I have ever seen.

  3. Other nearby destinations include Greenville, Charleston-Savannah and the Central North Carolina Coast.

  4. Columbia will offer all necessary service and entertainment needs.

Highlights

Congaree National Park was established in 2003 to preserve the largest tract of bottomland hardwood trees in the United States. The Congaree River flows through the park. Its forest habitat offers opportunities for hiking, camping and canoeing.

The parkland is often referred to as a swamp, but it is technically bottomland that is subject to occasional flooding. The forest is home to large mammals, which includes coyote, deer, otter, armadillo and bobcat.

Visitors can expect to spend a day or two exploring the park. It makes a great stop along the way or an excellent long-weekend destination
