Planning Tips

  1. There are just a few campgrounds near or in Bighorn Canyon, but they should be adequate.

  2. Nearby destinations include the Bighorn National Forest and Yellowstone National Park.

  3. Lovell will have most basic service and entertainment options. Billings or Cody are the best options of major service needs.

  4. This is a perfect stop on the way to or from Yellowstone National Park.

Highlights

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area extends along the waters of the Bighorn Lake created by the Yellowtail Dam. Parts of the Crow Indian Reservation and Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range are included in the recreation area.

Bighorn Canyon is divided into northern and southern sections that are not connected by road. Access to the recreation area passes through Fort Smith, Montana in the north and Lovell, Wyoming in the south.

Boat tours of the canyon, fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing are a few of the possible activities. Wild horses, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, mule deer and mountain lions are some of the large mammals in the recreation area.

Bighorn Canyon is a perfect stop if traveling to or from Yellowstone National Park. It can, however, be a destination in its own right and can support more than a short stay.
