Highlights
Founded in 1563, Durango is the capital and largest city in the State of Durango. The metropolitan area is rich in history and early Spanish influence is obvious.
The regional economy was originally fueled by mining operations, but more recently it has become a center for motion picture backdrops. The emphasis on cinema has transformed the city into a very metropolitan hub.
Be certain to explore the Plaza de Armas with itsBaroque architecture. The historic city market, Mercado Gómez Palacio, has been active for 200 years.
Outside the city you will find the Sierra de Órganos National Park to the east, which is known for its dramatic rock formations and forests.
To the west, the Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains offer a notable drive along the Devil’s Backbone route. Highway 40N is said to be treacherous, but well maintained.
