Baja Peninsula—Baja California & Baja California Sur

Interactive Map

Planning Tips

  1. There are private campgrounds throughout the route, most do not require reservations.

  2. The Go Experience Mexico site is an excellent resource for first-time south-of-the-border travelers.

  3. There are three separate Baja itineraries. This route will take you through all of them.

  4. Basic services will be available along the entire route. The major metropolitan areas are Ensenada, La Paz and Cabo San Lucas.

  5. Driving at night through Baja is not recommended, but this is primarily because of animals in the highway. If you must drive, most people get behind another vehicle.

Highlights

The Baja run down to Cabo San Lucas is undertaken by more Americans than any other route in Mexico. Baja even has a special economic zone status with the United States.

Route Mex 1 runs the full length of the peninsula and it is the highway prescribed on the interactive map, but it is not the only route or necessarily the best. Mex 5 runs along the Gulf of California and that is a beautiful drive. So the exact route is up to you.

There are a multitude of national and UNESCO site along the drive, so don’t just blow through. Take your time and explore.
