Wisconsin Dells
At the end of the last ice age, what is now Lake Wisconsin was the size of the Great Salt Lake. When the glacial dam melted, there was catastrophic flooding that eroded much of the sandstone creating huge cliffs and rock formations. This is now referred to as the “Dells” and has become a huge regional tourist attraction.
Many of the cliffs and rock formations are protected and can only be viewed from the water. Charter companies offer tours. More than a few can be explored on established trails with just a short hike. Boardwalks and railing have been constructed in many areas to help hikers avoid the slippery rock surfaces.
When some people refer to the “Dells,” they may be referring to the nearby town of Wisconsin Dells. The town has become something of an attraction or spectacle, depending on how you look at it. Numerous waterparks and boardwalk-variety businesses have been established to take advantage of tourism. It is not my thing, but it might be yours. So if you’re traveling with kids and you are looking for an appropriate entertainment option, or you’re just curious, then check it out.
