Newport, Rhode Island
The seaside city of Newport may conjure a variety of images or maybe none at all. It is well known for its Jazz festival and as a center for sailing enthusiasts, whether for racing or cruising. You might also think of seafood. Although very weather dependent, there are also beaches and of course the historic mansions.
Beginning in the 19th century, southern planters began to build elaborate summer home in and around Newport. By the 20th century it became a major summer residence for some of the nation’s wealthiest families like the Vanderbilts and Astors. They built their summer “cottages” along the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic.
Other things to see and do include the Cliff Walk, which leads up the cliffs and behind the mansions. Lighthouses are everywhere and there are the beaches. Also be sure to walk along the wharfs. This is where you will find the best seafood in addition to numerous shops and the views of the harbor.
