Planning Tips

  1. There are plenty of campgrounds close to the route. If you want more options, see the interactive Campgrounds map.

  2. Skagway, Whitehorse and Dawson City are destinations in their own right, so try to allot enough time.

  3. Skagway, Whitehorse and Dawson City are also the best options for services and entertainment.

Highlights

The Klondike Highway extends 440 miles from Skagway, Alaska, through a small section of British Columbia and then through the Yukon Territory to Dawson City. It can be driven in a single day, but there is a lot to see. Areas around Skagway, Whitehorse and Dawson City are natural stops.

The first leg from south to north, Skagway to Whitehorse, is probably the most geologically dramatic with towering mountains and glacial lakes. This can be stretched into a day or more.

The entire route contains historical sites relevant to early settlement, first nations and of course the gold rush. Whitehorse and Dawson City are rich in historic and cultural sites, but the areas around the cities offer much more.

I guess the point is not to rush. Stop, take a breath and try to absorb as much as you can.
