The city of Galveston has a centuries-long history. The urban center is noted for its rich collection of historic buildings.
Just south or the island is the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. The saltwater marshes provide wintering refuge for 300 bird species. This includes both Canadian and snow geese as well as numerous wading birds.
A short ferry ride will take you to the Bolivar Peninsula, which was originally part of a pirate kingdom. Today it is a less congested option with beaches and a reputation for great seafood.
Galveston Island is destination in its own right, but can be a jumping off point for a variety of other places that include New Orleans and Padre Island.
