Planning Tips
The only available campgrounds are in the park. Three have no hookups, but allow generators. The fourth is run by a vendor and is full hookup.
The best time to visit is late fall through early spring. Winter in Big Bend can be very pleasant.
Big Bend is a long way from anywhere. The town of Marathon is the closest municipality and it is more than an hour away. There is a store at Rio Grande Village, but supplies are limited, so be sure to plan accordingly.
Highlights
Named for a large bend in the Rio Grande River, Big Bend National Park was established in 1944. Despite the region’s hot semi-arid climate, the park offers a range of outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy opportunities for camping, hiking, horseback riding, bicycling or trips on the river. The park is also certified as a dark sky area.
Hikes and scenic drives through the park will help visitors discover a solitary mountain range and the largest protected area of the Chihuahuan Desert. The park preserves a fragile ecosystem filled with wide variety of flora and fauna. Most of the wildlife is active at night. Large mammals include cougar, javelina, pronghorn, coyote and Mexican black bear.
