The Beaumont-Port Arthur metropolitan area is an major port city and an important refining hub, but it is also a vibrant urban area surrounded by wildlife refuges, conservation areas and it is just south of Big Thicket National Preserve.

The proximity to these points of interest makes the Beaufort area an ideal base of operations for exploration or at least a stop along the way to other nearby destinations.
