To see everything this area has to offer, you need several days.
To be most central, I recommend staying at Custer State Park. There are 9 campgrounds with and without amenities.
Alternately, you might consider staying in more than one campground during an extended stay.
Rapid City is the largest town and offers the most options for both entertainment and services.
Custer also offers a range of family-friendly activities as well as groceries, fuel and laundromats.
