Planning Tips

  1. There are only a couple campgrounds close to the recreation area. There are many more in the forest. See the interactive Campgrounds Map.

  2. There are a number of other nearby destinations. See the Travel Destination map.

  3. This part of Oregon is pretty remote. Basic Service and Entertainment options are available in Oxbow. Wala Wala is probably the nearest city of any size.

Highlights

Hells Canyon National Recreation Area sits inside the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service. It is the deepest river gorge in America and is known for its world-class white water. The Snake River National Recreational Trail winds through the recreation area, which along with other trails offers great hiking opportunities.
