Planning Tips
There are three state park options in the area, Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island is great to visit, but a bit of a party spot. The state park is far enough away, but the island has a reputation. Kelleys Island or anything on the mainland are good options.
There are multiple ferry services and they are pretty reasonable for recreational vehicles. Passenger-only tickets are another option for visiting the islands.
If you are eligible to use military campgrounds, Camp Perry has full hookup sites. See the Military Campgrounds map.
Sandusky will meet all service and entertainment needs.
Highlights
This is probably not on everyone’s radar, but there are quite a few things to see in and around Sandusky.
Whether as a passenger, with a vehicle or even towing a trailer, South Bass and Kelleys Islands are both accessible by ferry. Along the shore and in the bay this area has some of the most photographed lighthouses in the Great Lakes.
In case you didn’t know… Cedar Point is the largest amusement park in the United States. More importantly, it has the world’s largest collection of not just roller coasters, but also vintage wooden roller coasters. It also has an associated water park for those hot summer days.
So whether you are just passing through, or you are looking for a novel destination, this is great place to spend a few days.
