Planning Tips

  1. The closest town to the southern unit is Medora. It has very few services. There are no gas stations, grocery stores or laundromats, so plan accordingly.

  2. If you are visiting during the summer, it can be pretty hot. If you think you need air conditioning, plan to stay outside the park. There are a few options on the Interactive Map.

Highlights

Theodore Roosevelt National Park was established in the North Dakota badlands in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt. It was an area important in Roosevelt’s life and influenced his later contributions as a naturalist.
The badlands of North Dakota extend through the park. These magnificent rock formations are part of the reason to visit. There is also an abundance of wildlife that includes elk, buffalo, wild horses and prairie dogs. Visitors will also find a range of recreational activities.
