Fundy Biosphere Region—New Brunswick

Planning Tips

  1. The only campgrounds are in Fundy National Park, but that is fairly central to the region.

  2. Nearby itineraries in Maine and Nova Scotia are obvious jumping-off points.

  3. The biosphere region is deliberately remote. There are some very small municipalities, but the primary areas for services and entertainment will be in the larger communities along the northern edge of the region.

Highlights

The Bay of Fundy has the largest tidal extremes in the world. The rising and falling tides have carved steep cliffs and dramatic rock formations along the coast. The coastline also contains a collection of lighthouses and small fishing villages. This unique and fragile ecosystem was recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Region.

The entire coastal area is protected, but Fundy National Park was established even before the biosphere was recognized. The park also preserves a large interior section that includes opportunities for a variety of outdoor activities.

The Fundy Trail Parkway provides a means of accessing and exploring the southern section of the biosphere.

Moving further inland, visitors will find a large number of waterfalls. The region is also known for its covered bridges, which are still in operation.

This is a truly remarkable section of New Brunswick. Exploring its many sites and geologic features calls for an extended stay.
