There is a wide ring of campgrounds around St. Louis. I preferred staying a little further out to avoid city sprawl, but you may prefer to be closer to some of the more interesting attractions.
If you have access to military campgrounds, Scott Air Force Base is on the Illinois side of the river.
Of course, St. Louis will meet all of your service and entertainment needs.
Highlights
The confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers has great historic significance. Before Europeans arrived, the greatest city north of Mexico was built just across the river from present day Saint Louis. Lewis and Clark wintered here just before beginning their journey up the Missouri River. The settlement of Saint Louis was the last vestige of real civilization for settlers on their westward march.
