Highlights
The Porcupine Mountains, often referred to as the “Porkies,” are located in the far western corner of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on the shores of Lake Superior. This region of low, rocky mountains contains some 60,000 acres of old-growth forest.
The forest and mountains are habitat for numerous large mammals. These include gray wolves, moose, black bears, bobcats, lynx, cougars, otters, beaver and, of course, porcupines.
The Porcupine Mountains have an extensive trail system and a system of roads that connect visitors the region’s many attractions. Points on particular interest in the mountains and wilderness areas are Lake of the Clouds, the Presque Isle River and Summit Peak. There are also multiple waterfalls throughout the area.
The Porkies represent one of Michigan’s star attractions. In order to get the full experience, you will need more than a long weekend.
