Planning Tips
There are a a couple state parks and a municipal campground that service this part of the coast.
Nearby destinations include Acadia, Boston or Katahdin. This can also be a stop on the way to Quebec or New Brunswick.
Portland is the best bet for services. Entertainment is offered in several of the other coastal communities.
The coastal highway can be extremely congested and, in any case, does not offer many good views of the coast.
Highlights
The rugged coastline of Southern Maine is punctuated by beaches, harbors and seaside towns. Lighthouses that once protected shipping are now more of a curiosity, but still a huge attraction. Seafood is a mainstay of local restaurants and fresh lobster is in high demand.
Towns like Portland, Freeport and Kennebunkport are teaming with visitors. Most are destined for fishing trips, whale watching excursions or just intent on local sights.
There is something for nearly everyone on the coast and this can be the full adventure or a stop along the way to other coastal destinations like Acadia or Boston.
