Planning Tips

  1. There are several campgrounds in or near the park. Wasagaming Campground is large and very well maintained. I would stay there again.

  2. Winnipeg is the only nearby destination.

  3. Onanole to the south and Dauphin to the north will have basic service and entertainment options.

Highlights

Sitting atop the Manitoba Escarpment, the forests of Riding Mountain National Park sit in stark contrast to the surrounding plains and farmland. The park protects a combination of ecosystems that include prairie, boreal and eastern forest.

Large mammals include elk, moose, coyotes, wolves and Canadian lynx. The park also boasts the highest density of black bear in North America and a small number of bison in the Lake Audy area. Early morning and evening are the best times to see some of the wildlife.

Outdoor activities at Riding Mountain include fishing, hiking, paddling, biking and of course camping. The Wassingame Village offers a variety of shops, tennis courts, restaurants and a movie theater among other things.

Riding Mountain National Park is a distinct destination and offers enough diverse activities to merit a stay of a week or more.
