Planning Tips

  1. There are numerous state parks throughout the forest, but no Forest Service Campgrounds. Illinois state parks are generally well maintained and a pretty good value.

  2. Carbondale is probably your best bet for service and entertainment options.

Highlights

The Shawnee National Forest covers nearly 500,000 acres at the very southern tip of Illinois and just north of the Ohio River. This rugged, forested part of the state offers an abundance of hiking and climbing opportunities. Points of particular interest include numerous waterfalls, the Garden of the Gods rock formations and the Pounds Hollow Recreation Area.

This region can easily sustain a week or more of combined exploration and relaxation.
