There are two state parks and a couple of nature preserves on the Illinois River midway between Chicago and Davenport, Illinois. They preserve an area along the river that is rich in caverns, steep canyons and towering waterfalls.

This is a section of the state that presents a very high payoff destination for hiking, paddling or just general exploration. It can easily support a week, but even a short stay will pay high dividends.
