Planning Tips

  1. Quite a few campgrounds are east of Boise or in the northern hills.

  2. If you are eligible to use military campgrounds, both Mountain Home AFB and Gowen Field have Campgrounds. See the Military Campgrounds map.

  3. This area is also very close to points of interest in Southeastern Idaho or western Oregon. Consult the Travel Destinations map for more ideas.

  4. For service and entertainment opportunities, Boise or the Twin Falls area are both great options.

Highlights

Straddling the Boise River, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Boise, Idaho is a vibrant western city. This makes it a perfect base for exploring the nearby mountains and other nearby points of interest.

The Ponderosa Pine and Payette River Scenic Byways will lead you through the forested hills and connect you with many of the local sights. The Snake River Canyon is another area that need a close look. Along the way, the local hot springs and and waterfalls are high-payoff side trips.

Also consider the nearby Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area. There are thought to be at least 700 mating pairs and as many as 15 species of of raptors nesting in the cliffs along the river.
