Highlights
For a city of just over 200,000, Des Moines has a much bigger feel. There are a number of sights to take in. Some of these are the Papa John Sculpture Park, the Greater Des Moine Botanical Garden and the Des Moine Art Center.
Places of architectural interest are the State Capitol—one of only two with five domes. Terrace Hill, the governor’s residence, is a spectacular Victorian mansion. Jordan House, another Victorian mansion, was once part of the Underground Railroad and has been repurposed as a museum.
You absolutely need to visit the East Village on the east side of the Des Moines River. This trendy neighborhood is a blend of hip eateries, boutiques, galleries and historic building.
Des Moines may be the most exciting city in the plains. You need to check in and see for yourself.
