Planning Tips

  1. It goes without saying that Colorado Springs will be your go-to for service and entertainment options.

  2. There are more than enough things to keep you busy along the mountains west of the city, but Great Sand Dunes National Park is a doable day trip.

  3. There are a variety of campground options. I stayed at Cheyenne Mountain State Park and really enjoyed the location and convenience.

  4. If you are eligible to stay in a military campground, there are two in the Colorado Springs area. Check the military campgrounds map for more details.

Highlights

I was fourteen the first time I saw the Rocky Mountains. It was at the end of a really long day driving through nothing but flat grasslands and farms. Then out across the plains, I saw the mountains for the first time rising above Colorado Springs. The plains reached nearly to the city, then there were a few rolling hills and then the Colorado Rockies rose up with Pikes Peak most prominent against that backdrop.
