Anchorage—Alaska

Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska and contains numerous museums and cultural sites. It is also a central location with connections by road, boat or air taxi to many other nearby parks and points of interest.

Here are a few:

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

The Conservation Center gives a home to injured and orphaned wildlife. Many of the animals cannot be returned to the wild and become permanent residents. Visitors can walk or drive a 1.5-mile loop and see the resident wildlife.

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve

Established in 1980, Lake Clark National Park protects rain forests, alpine tundra, lakes, glaciers and volcanoes. Despite the lack of roads into the park, there are several settlements. Visitors must travel to the park via air taxi.

Katmai National Park and Preserve

This park was formed around Katmai Mountain. It protects about 18 volcanoes, many of which have been active in the last century. It is also famous for its large population of brown bears. The park's subarctic climate is ideal for year-round activities, which include hiking, camping, kayaking, backpacking, backcountry skiing and fishing.
