Planning Tips

  1. There are no government campgrounds in this area. There are a handful of private campgrounds, but much of the area will support boondocking.

  2. Nearby destinations include Anchorage and the Alaska Highway.

  3. Service and entertainment options are limited. Small towns and villages along the Edgerton and Toc Highways can meet basic needs.

Highlights

Wrangell-St. Elias is the largest national park in the United States. It includes most of the Wrangell and St. Elias Mountain Ranges and some of the highest peaks in North America.

The park preserves a combination of spruce forests, glaciers, glacial valleys and broad icefields. The higher elevations are rugged exposed rock.

Much of this park is accessible only by air or water, but there are a couple roads that will accommodate motor vehicles. The Nabesna Road allows access from the north from the Toc Highway. The McCarthy Road begins at the end of the Edgerton Highway in the town of Chitina. Both are closed during winter.
