Planning Tips
BLM operates four campgrounds along the highway. There is also commercial camping in Coldfoot.
North of Fairbanks, service and entertainment options are extremely limited. Medical services are available in Deadhorse. Basic services can be found in both Coldfoot and Deadhorse.
The BLM 5 Mile Campground at mile marker 60 has the only dump station on the Dalton Highway.
Highlights
The Dalton Highway is runs from just north of Fairbanks to the town of Deadhorse and is described as one of the most remote roads in North America. It is not for the faint of heart, but people do make the journey which takes them into the Arctic Circle and over the Brooks Range.
The route is technically maintained as a supply road for the oil industry and it follows the Trans-Alaska pipeline to Deadhorse, where the road abruptly ends at a gated chain-link fence. If the plan is to see the Arctic Ocean, that can only be accomplished through an organized tour.
As bleak as it may sound, the mountain vistas of the Brooks range and opportunity to see wildlife that includes caribou, musk oxen and wolves, will make this a once-in-a-lifetime journey.
